Preventive Dentistry

PRIMUM NON NOCERE.-“FIRST, DO NO HARM.”

Preventive dentistry is our priority for every patient. Why is it so important? In most cases the decay (cavity) starts as a small lesion in between the teeth. The lesion is so small that it can only be detected with a radiograph (x-ray). Our state-of the-art preventive dentistry techniques allow us to treat cavities while preserving the healthy parts of the tooth.

Until recently we treated small lesions by drilling and removing up to 1/3 of a healthy tooth structure. Now we use the revolutionary European technique to treat small lesions by infiltration only, without drilling and removing the healthy parts of the tooth.

Even If the lesion has already progressed we can still treat it without drilling by using air abrasion instead.

WHAT IS AIR ABRASION?

Air abrasion is an instrument that works like a mini sandblaster. It is used to spray away decay.

During the air abrasion, a fine stream of particles is aimed at the decayed portion of the tooth. These particles are made of silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture and are propelled toward the surface of the tooth by compressed air or a gas that runs through the dental hand piece. The small particles of decay on the tooth surface are removed as the stream of particles strikes them. The particles of decay are then “suctioned” away.

Air abrasion is also being used to remove stains from your teeth without damaging them. This short video illustrates how exactly air abrasion works and how effective it is.

WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR BIGGER CAVITIES?

Even if the lesion has already progressed, at SKY DENTAL we can still treat it without drilling, by using air abrasion. Air abrasion leaves behind much more of the healthy tooth tissue. It generates no heat, sound, pressure or vibration. In addition, it reduces the need for anesthesia, making it an ideal choice for children and those who experience dental anxiety.

At SKY DENTAL we offer a variety of preventive dentistry procedures, including fluoride, prophylaxis and dental sealant. Call us today for high quality dental care, so that you can keep your beautiful smile for years to come!
