FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often do I need to get a dental cleaning? 2017-05-04T19:29:40+00:00

Teeth cleaning is an important part of oral hygiene. It helps to remove dental plaque in order to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. It is recommended to get your teeth cleaned once every 6 months.

Why do I need to floss if I brush my teeth thoroughly? 2017-05-04T19:29:08+00:00

Flossing helps to remove dental plaque between the teeth, in the area that your toothbrush can’t reach. Regular flossing helps to reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Am I a good candidate for implants? 2017-07-20T19:27:59+00:00

Implants are a good choice if you are missing one or several teeth, especially since they allow us to restore your smile without damaging your other teeth. You must have healthy gums and sufficient bone density to support the implant. In some cases, when the bone is too thin or soft, we need to transplant bone tissue (bone grafting) before placing implants in the jawbone. The best way to prepare for implants is to do a CT scan prior to the placement of the implant. We perform the CT scan in-house, with the Gendex CT Scan, for the most precise results and do not charge extra for this procedure prior to the implant placement.

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Shahmanyan to find out if you are a candidate for dental implants.

What are porcelain veneers? 2017-07-20T19:10:51+00:00

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells, which are permanently bonded to the front surface of teeth. They are custom-made and colored to match the shade of the surrounding teeth. When done properly, veneers look very natural and can be applied to multiple teeth on both the top and bottom rows.

Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to staining. With proper care, they will retain their whiteness for a very long time.

How long does Invisalign take to work? 2017-07-20T19:11:44+00:00

The average treatment time is 12 months. The length of time depends on how crowded your teeth are and how far they have to move. The best way to minimize your time in aligners is to wear them for 22+ hours a day and switch to your next aligner every two weeks.

Is Invisalign an option for me? 2017-07-20T19:13:49+00:00

Invisalign is a great way to straighten your teeth without wearing traditional metal braces. These clear, removable aligners are specifically crafted to fit your teeth.  During your exam with Dr. Shahmanyan he will be able to tell you if you are a good candidate for Invisalign.

What are the advantages of metal-free fillings? 2017-07-20T19:16:31+00:00

Metal fillings were used in the past to treat cavities. Metal doesn’t match the color of your natural teeth and doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing. Metal fillings also expand and contract with heat and cold and may cause cracks in your teeth and possible tooth loss.

Unlike metal fillings, white fillings match the color of your teeth and are more natural-looking. White fillings strengthen the cured tooth and do not conduct extreme hot and cold temperature. Contact Dr. Shahmanyan for a consultation and have your old metal fillings replaced with a healthier alternative.

Can I have a cavity if my tooth doesn’t hurt? 2017-07-20T19:19:30+00:00

A cavity is a hole in a tooth, which can vary in size. While larger cavities often touch the nerve inside the tooth and cause pain, the smaller holes can go unnoticed for a long period of time. The best time to fill the hole/cavity in the tooth is when it is small in order to avoid getting near the nerve. If a filling is placed too close to the nerve due to the size of the cavity, the tooth can continue to hurt and may require a root canal.

I am concerned about radiation exposure. Do I have to get X-rays? 2017-07-20T19:22:05+00:00

X rays can provide accurate information on the condition of your teeth.  Many cavities go unnoticed until they are too large and reach the nerve in your tooth. X-rays help to spot and treat the cavity early on, before it requires more complicated and costly procedure, such as a root canal. Most importantly, at Sky Dental we use advanced X-ray equipment, which provides the least amount of radiation.
